Psalm 119:72, “The law of thy mouth is better unto me than thousands of gold and silver.”
How precious is the law of God to you? It seems I end up writing a lot about the law of God. Partly because many in the Church refuses to see its value, and also because I love how the law reveals the character of God. Verses like Psalm 119:165 offer stability in a time when men are running to and fro, (“Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them” Psalm 119:165). Most people in the body of Christ know nothing of the nature of God; I find this quite disturbing. How can we chart a course into the arms of God when we know little of His principles?
We act as if the words of the Old Testament hold little importance to the Church today. Have we ventured so far from God that His words hold no worth? The psalmist said, “O how I love thy law! It is my meditation all the day” (Psalm 119:97). The Apostle Paul said, “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, [i.e., God breathed] and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, [dedicated to God] thoroughly furnished unto all good works” (2 Timothy 3:16, 17).
I remember back before my wife and I married; this was way before e-mail and cell phones. I lived in Ohio and she lived in West Virginia. We would call each other occasionally, but most of our communication was through what we call today, snail-mail. When I got a letter from her, it was as if heaven descended. I would read it over and over again. The aroma of her perfume lingering on that letter was intoxicating. All I could think about was being with Her. I would do everything within my power to get to where she was. 32 years latter, 4 children, and 6 grandchildren, she continues to rock my world! When I read some of those Psalms I can’t help but believe that’s what the psalmist felt.
The Word of God is good news from a far country. It’s water to a thirsty soul. God’s law reveals His character, His disposition, It exposes the love God has for His creation, such love that He would sent His only begotten Son to die in order to save his beloved. Wow! How could we not fall in love with the law that shows such love?
As we get ready for the advent season, wouldn’t it be great if we could reconnect with this awesome God who permits us to call Him Father. What better way, than to find Him in His Word. Allow the law of to speak to you in a new way. Allow the Holy Spirit to reacquaint you with the law through His eyes. “That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us…” (Romans 8:4). Ask God to open up this treasure chest of jewels to your understanding. Remember, if we’ll ask, we can receive.
